THE STRONG MAN OF KATANGA

This nickname was not given to Godefroid Munongo only for his strong views in politics, but it was equally given to him to describe his connections to the to “little people”, the have-nots.

Wherever we went, he would hold meetings with the administrators, local kings, and other dignitaries. However, no sooner had he finished his hearings, whatever the hour, he would ask to speak to the elders and all who had any concern (the disabled and those who had neurological problems.)

He never underestimated anybody, and as he often would say, “these people will always tell the truth about many things. They generally have no ulterior motive, no excessive ambitions and have no interest in wanting your place, unlike those who always say “YES”, and yet are not necessarily good advisers.”

It is clear that the new generation of leaders in the country, like flattery and honor, instead of being in contact with the people and those who have little interest in the system.

In conclusion, Godefroid Munongo had the gift of communication, but he also knew how to listen to people. He always had a kind word or reassuring comment in the local language, wherever we went in the Congo or overseas.

In my humble opinion, this was a gift from God.
